Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket fuses Thai charm with international elegance.

Soothing Streams and Pink Reverie

BY AYUSH MADAN

Nestled in the soft white dunes of Karon Beach, surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket is a property with a powerfully-unique allure. Having heard of its unique design; leisure activities for the whole family including an integrated water park; and of course, the beautiful beach views and golden sands quintessential to Phuket; I was looking forward to a few days of rest and relaxation in this luxe property.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As I entered the lobby to check in, any fatigue remaining from my journey quickly vanished. I sat down to sip on an iced refreshment, a butterfly pea soda, and heard the soothing streams of water trickling down the cliff beside me – runoff from the resort’s herb and vegetable garden. Soft warm skylights illuminated the space, beautifully contrasted by the rich wooden beams laid along the ceiling. Surrounding the building were patterned pastel pink walls reminiscent of Old Town Phuket, decorated with the same Sino-Portuguese touches prevalent throughout the city. From the lobby and hallways, to the spa and dining areas, these soft pink hues and running streams of water were consistently present throughout the resort, creating a tranquil atmosphere that blended seamlessly with the natural beauty of the island.

Our room was the Premium Deluxe, which came with floor-to-ceiling windows and a large balcony overlooking the beach, the palm trees, and the Andaman Sea. Inside the room was the most comfortable king- sized bed I have slept on, complete with a pillow menu on the nightstand for guests who prefer specific levels of firmness – just one phone call away. Decorating the walls were vibrant mandala-like art pieces, adding character to the room, while the wooden floors, doors, and ceiling grounded us in a warm and distinctly-Thai aura. The bathroom was spacious and elegant, adorned with polished marble tile and earth tones painting a sophisticated ambience. It came equipped with both a rain shower and a bathtub, and to our delight, lavender- scented bubble bath!

DRINKING & DINING

The dining options at the resort were impressive, with both restaurants, COAST Beach Club & Bistro and The Cove, offering a variety of cuisines that celebrated Thai flavours and international favourites. One of the first meals we were given at COAST Beach Club & Bistro was an off- the-menu selection of Indian food. Expertly coached by the Indian chef from their sister property, Centara Villas Phuket, I was impressed by the vibrant spread the kitchen had whipped up and placed before me. All of the classic North Indian favourites were in attendance: mini samosas with mint and tamarind chutneys, creamy butter chicken with garlic naan, daal makhani, and of course, a big plate of chicken biryani, with the full accoutrement of pickled onions, mint chutney, and fresh coriander.

The following morning, my partner and I were pleased to sample the breakfast buffet at The Cove. The restaurant was absolutely buzzing with frenetic energy, with a family seated at almost every table. Despite this, the staff were ever present, providing excellent service and accommodating each and every guest’s needs. For those with lactose intolerance or food allergies, you are in good hands. Simply tell the staff what modifications you need, and they will be made with haste. Any breakfast item you could dream of was available here. I counted over a dozen kinds of breads, muffins, croissants, and pastries. They also had both pancakes and waffles so you really can have the best of both worlds. Across from the bread section were an assortment of cheeses, and I predictably made a beeline for the brie. For those not fond of Western breakfasts, the restaurant also offers fresh porridge, Phuket-style Hokkien noodles, and a variety of classic Thai stir-fry dishes.

Every hotel breakfast I’ve been to has had an egg station, but this was the first time I ever saw a made-to-order roti station. It felt strange to me at first, to see roti being made in a 5-star resort rather than the side of the road, but I realise it was an ingenious addition for travellers looking to taste more of our cuisine without venturing far. Right opposite the roti cart was a fresh noodle station, once again keeping the selection tethered to Thai roots.

The highlight of our dining experience was undoubtedly the Sunday brunch, which featured fresh seafood, made-to-order ribs and steak, and decadent desserts, all set against the backdrop of the blue waves and sky. We sat outside on the patio,
and immediately started grooving to the electronic beats being spun by the DJ. Whilst feasting on my assortment of fresh
oysters and grilled lobster, and sipping on a fresh watermelon smoothie, I realised this is what I wanted my whole summer to look and feel like.

ACTIVITIES & LOCALE

My visit to the resort’s SPA Cenvaree was unforgettable. The aromatherapy treatment, which incorporated traditional Thai techniques and natural ingredients from the resort’s garden, left us feeling revitalised. As you enter the spa, you are given options of four different essential oils with different healing properties. My partner chose the anti-cellulite oil, while I chose the dream oil made with sandalwood and cinnamon. Once you have changed into your robe, you are guided into either the sun or moon room. The masseuses carefully placed our feet into rose water, and scrubbed them clean. I felt a wave of relaxation and tingles run down my spine when one of them started playing a sound bowl to signal the start of our treatment.

Ahead of the session, I had circled points I wanted them to focus on, which were my neck and shoulders. You can also pick the pressure level you prefer, and any areas on your body you want them to avoid. Even though it only lasted an hour, I felt
myself enter a light stage of sleep from how deeply relaxed I was. I was told that the spa offers a range of signature treatments, and was especially told that the “Honeymoon Retreat” package, which includes a couple’s full body massage and Thai herbal facial, is highly recommended.

During the daytime at the resort, the pools are the place to be, so make sure to head over to the resort’s integrated water park. There is a large main pool facing the beach, and another pool located on a second story with a bar for adults. The lazy river, located just behind the main pool, is long and winding, carrying its swimmers in a loop around the property. I found myself a cosy tube and laid in the river for quite a while, letting the water carry me as I got a nice tan. Along the lazy river are water slides which were quite fast and a lot of fun to go down. However, my favourite part of the water zone was the mini cliff you could jump off of with a clear lagoon underneath. Once the lifeguards gave the go ahead, my partner and I took multiple turns cannonballing off the edge. It was truly exhilarating.

Moreover, the resort has no shortage of activities and classes. For example, there are Muay Thai classes in the gym, which has everything you need for a full workout.Furthermore, Centara has entertainers on retainer whose only job it is to make sure that you are having fun! They organise ‘Aqua Fun’ activities and pool games, beach volleyball, pizza making, and even movie nights at the Camp Safari. Their schedule is so extensive that you can ensure you and your children will have something to do every hour of every day, from 8.30am to 7.30pm.

Beyond the property, I had a chance to check out the Old Phuket Town on the east end of the island, only a short drive away from the resort. The weekend market seemed to go on for miles and miles, with a plethora of souvenirs, jewellery, clothes, and street food lining both sides of the road. I highly recommend going if it is your first time in Phuket.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway or a family vacation – or even a stunning venue for a wedding – Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket truly offers an unparalleled escape that caters to every desire.
