Ways to have a more eco-friendly and sustainable shaadi.

Flowers tend to be a big part of weddings. They uplift any space and induce a celebratory feeling. But fresh blooms are often disposed of after an event, contributing to the immense waste caused by the wedding industry.

To be more eco-friendly, many couples are choosing to bid adieu to the roses, hydrangeas, and lilies. Instead, people are exploring alternative ways to decorate their big day, without compromising on the aesthetic. Think of succulents, foliage, fabric tassels, and sculptures. An array of sustainable elements can add depth, colour, and meaning to your décor design. To make it easy, here are five creative ideas that can help you plan your wedding sans flowers.

SUCCULENTS AND HERBS

Go green – quite literally. Instead of floral centrepieces, opt for potted plants like succulents or herbs. These not only look fresh and creative but can also be used after the event is over. Your guests can be encouraged to take them home after the event. They’re easy to carry back and you can add tiny cards with tips on how to care for the plants.

ORIGAMI ART

Find a stack of old magazines and using origami, the Japanese technique of paper folding, turn the pages into art. You can choose the fold to match the style of your celebration. Hang a whole cluster of origami birds for a playful photo-op, or create a table display with paper flowers for the welcome dinner. The little props will look innovative, and you’ll be giving new life to something that was otherwise collecting dust.

ECLECTIC ELEMENTS

Unexpected objects often make for the most interesting table arrangements. For example, stack a few of your favourite books together, place a geometric sculpture, and add a terrarium with little greens.

If you have a themed event, look for elements that will convey the style you’re going for. If it’s a nautical look, put together conch shells and wooden boats. Each table can be different, with a variety of little props to create diversity and an eclectic aesthetic. Your guests will surely love it.

LIGHTING AND CANDLES

If you’re going to eliminate flowers, then the goal should be to replace this important element with another striking element, such as lighting. Your lighting plan can make a room pop with energy. One way to do this is to opt for a statement ceiling installation with chandeliers and fairy lights. Or create a dramatic backdrop complete with LED bulbs.

If you’re looking to subdue the mood and create a cosy vibe, use lighting elements that softly illuminate. Candles come in an array of colours, styles, and sizes, and add a warm glow to the space.

TEXTILES AND TASSELS

Textiles can add depth and volume to your wedding decor. Think of floral printed table linens or textured crepe ceiling drapes. Incorporating fabric is a quick way to create an impact and replace flowers.

Hanging textile tassels or the more traditional gota-patti can lend colour and playfulness to any event space. If you’re going for a more elegant aesthetic, you can suspend white ribbon and crystal strings. The focus will go towards the ceiling and no one will miss the flowers.
