The Thai-Indian men making their mark on the City of Angels.
By Ashima Sethi and Aiden Jewelle Gonzales
As two single women, we’re sure we’re not alone when it comes to asking this question: how does one even define an eligible bachelor?
Consult with the Oxford Dictionary and you get ‘n. eligible bachelor = one that many people want to marry, especially because he is rich.’ Ask our friend Pooja aka Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and you’ll get ‘good looks, good looks, and good looks.’
It seems like everywhere you turn, there’s a shallow, materialistic notion about what we’re supposed to look for when it comes to men and partners. Well thankfully our team at Masala are all about busting the status quo and looking under the surface. We like to ask the difficult questions…or in this case the hilarious questions!
So for this special edition of our annual Men’s Issue, we’re rounding up some of the most interesting, charming, and successful men in our community by putting them under interrogation…you know, in true Indian aunty fashion.

He’s also a big fan of reading, some of his favourite works include The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, and he enjoys podcasts like The Secret Sauce, Bankless, 99% Invisible, and Unchained.
What are some values you hold dear to your heart?
There are many but generosity and kindness are very important. Having a strong passion for something, whether it be hobbies, work, or other interests. I think having an open-mind is important, especially towards learning, understanding other people’s viewpoints, and even being open-minded about failure. Other values I hold dear are determination, honesty and integrity, and being family-oriented.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
I consider myself independent, innovative, open-minded, and adaptable. I am a risk-taker and firmly believe there is no gain without risk. Accountability is very important to me, I believe growth is linked to being able to be held accountable for your actions. I am constantly in a growth mindset, and on a journey to better myself. In regards to my views on the world, I strive to support gender equality and overall, I consider myself empathetic, passionate, family-oriented, and I’m willing to learn in new situations, all of which helps me nurture my relationships with people.
What are some of the things you have left on your bucket list?
In terms of travel, I would love to trek to Everest Base Camp, go diving in the Galapagos Islands, visit Patagonia in Chile, and Machu Picchu in Peru. Of course, I would love to have the opportunity to fly around the moon and walk in space, but let’s see! Other things I would love to accomplish include writing a book, achieving a Unicorn startup, take a company to IPO status, become fluent in a new language, and be on Forbes’ 40 under 40 list.
What are some qualities you look for in a partner?
Someone with a growth mindset who is easy-going, trustworthy, creative, innovative and tech-savvy. I also look for kindness, someone who enjoys cooking and travelling, is loyal and willing to speak their truth, has good social skills, but also someone who enjoys a peaceful night in like me. Bonus points if they are into crypto trading and have an understanding of web3.
Given the choice of anyone in the world, who would you want as a dinner guest and why?
Elon Musk. He is one of the greatest entrepreneurial innovators of our time, and I would like to learn what actually drives him as well his greatest lesson in life.
If money was no object, what is the first thing you’d buy and why?
A private jet to take me anywhere. Having a private jet will give me the freedom to enjoy work and play, which I believe can enhance productivity and creativity as well.
After a long day, what do you do to relax?
I sometimes watch series, movies, or anime. I listen to music, read, go for walks, and spend time with loved ones and my dog. Beyond that I enjoy yoga and meditation, and taking trips out of the city. I also enjoy engaging with crypto-related content in the form of podcasts or videos.
If you had to have one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Kraphao gai, one of my go-to-foods. You cannot go wrong in any situation…except if it has carrots and green beans!

SHIV GULRAJANI
Shiv was born on the 9th of May, making him a driven and passionate Taurus. He completed his high school education at NIST International School before pursuing a BSc Accounting & Finance at Warwick Business School, where he graduated with First Class Honours. Putting his skills to practice, Shiv works as the Director at Indulge Fusion Food and Cocktail Bar, Ministry of Crab Bangkok, Haoma, NutriChef, and S Sukhumvit Suites Hotel. Prior to pursuing entrepreneurship, he worked in private equity and corporate finance for three years in London, Singapore, Phnom Penh, and Bangkok. In his free time, Shiv loves losing himself in a good book, building and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, scuba diving around all the beautiful sites in Thailand, and cooking (he promises more than just MAMA noodles!).
What are some of the things in your life that you’re grateful for?
I feel truly blessed for the unconditional love from my family and friends with whom I share such cherished moments. I’m also really grateful for all the support and opportunities around me.
In your opinion, what are some qualities about you that will make you a good partner?
I can be a little rigid and routine-driven in my career and life but also with the right person, I can be quite playful and spontaneous. I like to open the car door, pull out the chair for my lady, and surprise her with roses (just because). At the same time I want to encourage my partner to be happy, and feel like they are the best version of themselves with me. Ladies, chivalry isn’t dead…just yet.
If you had to plan the perfect date or night out, what would it look like?
I’m not too sure about how it would look, but I’m quite sure of how it should feel- whether it’s a fancy rooftop dinner or spending the evening cooking a simple dinner at home, what’s important to me is an immersive, heartfelt conversation, getting to know each other, laughing and losing track of time in the process.
What do you hope to achieve in the next five years?
Oh wow we only just met and that’s quite personal! Jokes aside, I hope to make an impact and a difference in my profession, to maintain and build upon deep-rooted connections with my family, friends and loved ones, and when I’m not too busy doing all of that, I hope to travel and explore the world (hopefully with a partner if this Masala thing works)!
What are some of your favourite foods and why?
Kraphao, a staple, you really can’t go wrong. Also my mother’s very special Indian butter chicken curry, nothing like home-cooked food made by my beautiful mother. I’ll also add my sister’s home-cooked lasagne to the list. Anyone that has had the privilege of being sent this dish by my multi-talented sister will 100 percent vouch for its cheesy ooziness and deliciousness.
What are some things you won’t tolerate in regard to someone else’s behaviour?
Snobbery really irks me, and looking down on others, as respect and compassion are values that are very important to me.
What do you wish you were really good at and why?
The ability to learn new things efficiently and apply them appropriately, as these days things change ever so quickly and you never know what to expect. For me the top need of the hour is the ability to grasp these unpredictable changes and accordingly capitalise on them – ideation without execution is a delusion.

SARTHAK MANOCHA
A tall and talented Leo-Virgo cusp, Sarthak might be just 28 but he’s a Deals (Mergers & Acquisitions) advisor and sharp as a tack – but don’t tell him that to his face, as you’ll make this self-effacing fitness enthusiast blush. Having graduated with a BSc (Hons) Economics from the University of Warwick, Sarthak, when not improving his mind with reading during his down time, can be found playing and watching sports, particularly basketball and tennis; as well as other fitness-related pursuits – from training and power lifting, to long-distance endurance training, and more recently, plyometrics and functional-based training. If you’re not a gym rat, however, worry not – he’s also expressed a love for watching movies and TV shows with his family (and perhaps, we’re thinking, a significant other).
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
Oh this is a hard one – I’m not really one to talk about myself that much! I guess if you ask my friends, they’d say that they appreciate my sincerity, dedication, and empathy. I’m not sure if I agree with all of that (they’re a little too kind!) but I do like to go out of my way for the ones I love and care about.
Some values that I consider really important, and that I like to keep in mind whenever I approach something, are respect and loyalty – you really have to earn those.
If you could live in any three cities in the world, which would they be, and why?
I’ve always been a city person – I just like the pace of city life and the experiences cities have to offer. So as corny as it may sound, my top three would be: London, New York and Hong Kong, with London at number one.
What personality tests have you taken, and do you agree with the results?
To be honest, I haven’t taken one in a pretty long time! I’d say I’m an open book to those who know me and feel the best personality test one could take in life is through family and friends – they hold a mirror up to yourself, and help you evolve every day. No one can determine our nature as distinctly as our family and friends.
But if I were to do one now, I suppose some of the adjectives/nouns I’d expect to see would include ‘fiery and energetic nature’ combined with ‘a logical and meticulous mind,’ ‘passion with perfectionism’, and ‘confidence with caution.’ Just to clear the air – this is solely based on self-analysis and family perception!
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I guess based on my hobbies and interests, I’ve always been into adventure sports. But other than that, I did participate in a couple of fashion shows back at university, and those definitely have to count too, right? [Laughs]
Tell us about your favourite way to pamper your significant other.
Time and being present in the moment — in a world where everyone is constantly caught up with the hustle and bustle, particularly in my field of work where the hours can get pretty brutal, there’s no better gift one can give their loved ones. Quality time might be the simplest yet most treasured gestures. But of course, not to miss, to pamper is to spend that time doing things they love and enjoy, and doing it together.
VIDUSH MAHANSARIA
Tall, dark, and handsome, Vid can probably be considered your typical Virgo – hardworking, detail-oriented, and hiding a wicked sense of humour underneath it all. Don’t just ask the stars though, check out his CV: he graduated with a BA in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a BSc in Finance from Wharton, and at the tender age of 28 is also the Co-founder and CEO of software company Vara, which offers payroll and time-tracking solutions to SMBs in Indonesia, and has raised funding from international investors. When he’s not busy being a prodigy entrepreneur, however, you can find him experimenting with natural-light photography, sipping on single- origin coffee brews, or taking part in anything sporty and competitive.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
I’m tall. I feel like there’s a high likelihood those genes get passed on to their future grandkids – you’re welcome. And a big thank you to my ancestors for handing those genes down to me!
I tend to value experiences over things. Put away the screens, travel, and spend time with one another. Good vibes, good food, and good conversation.
I love history, so I’ll always relate any current world affairs to something that’s happened in the past. Humanity has been around for ages, and nothing we’re seeing or experiencing is new by any stretch of the imagination. It’s all been done before!
What is your secret superpower – that is, modesty aside, what do you think you’re in the top percentile of?
Cheeky banter. Almost like it’s nobody’s business. The truth is, it shouldn’t even be my business, but if there were an award for it, I’d win it.
What are five things on your bucket list that you’re hoping to achieve in the next five years?
- Run a marathon. And then, eventually, an Ironman. Wish me luck!
- Go skiing in the Alps. I’ve never skied before!
- To compete in an invite-only CrossFit competition
- Be nomadic. Set up systems to be able to work from anywhere
- Bootstrap a business from the ground up without any funding
You’ve been tasked to cook a meal for your significant other – what would you make for her, and why?
Instant noodles. Add some chopped vegetables, drain the water, make it look like an Asian stir-fry. Incredibly yummy and 0 percent chance of failure!
What are the top five qualities you would look for in a significant other, and can you elaborate?
- An absolutely outrageous sense of humour. Why be serious when you can be funny? It’s also good for you!
- Spontaneity. Planning is cute, but life really comes alive when you let serendipity take over.
- Ambition, and the desire to progress. We have to push ourselves to be the best versions of ourselves, and that attitude is infectious.
- The realisation that life should never be taken too seriously. At the end of the day, we are collectively less than a meaningless speck in a vast ocean of galaxies. Nothing matters as much as you think it does.
- Can put up with me. Probably the most important, and the core to the success of our relationship!
EKACHAI THANAPORNWATTANA
Ekachai, better known by his loved ones as Eddy, was born on 6th December 1990 making him a fun-loving and dynamic Sagittarius. Bangkok-based, he attended Mahidol University International College (MUIC) and has since been involved in a few professional pursuits mainly centred on being a business intelligence consultant, and cryptocurrency investment and trading. In his spare time, Eddy enjoys the finer things in life. He loves fine-dining; seeing the world; partying with his friends, especially poolside or on yachts; a wide-range of hip- hop music; sports like table tennis; and action and comedy movies, which he prefers to put on when he’s relaxing.
How would you describe your relationship with your family?
I’m very close to family and I feel like it’s important to keep these bonds strong. My parents are pretty much retired, so I take care of them. We go on trips, and hang out a lot at home day-to-day. I think it’s a blessing to be able to spend so much time as a family unit. In the future, when I move towards having my own family I’d like some of my existing family values to be passed on. However, I would want my children to be able to form their own values too. Having a healthy mix is very important.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
I’m fun to be around, which I think will help in developing a good relationship with my in-laws. I want to be able to spend a lot of time with them, so I’d want them to like me for me. I also think I’m a thoughtful person, I’m constantly thinking about other people and how I can help them and be there for them. This ties into being caring, which is another trait I value. Finally, in relationships, I’ve always been loyal. I’ve stayed fully committed to my previous partners, which is a trait I’m proud of.
If you had to plan the perfect date, what would it look like?
It really depends on the person I’m dating as I would want to cater to their likes and dislikes. However, it would be a full-day adventure with amazing food, awesome drinks, and great conversation. I’m definitely a spontaneous person, so I think I would love to go with the flow. In regards to destinations I like, Chiang Mai is on the list, Phuket as it’s close to all of the other islands, and Pattaya, as nowadays it’s got great beach clubs, really cool cafés, and of course the marina for boating.
What are some of your goals for the next five years?
I want to continue building passive sources of income that will allow me to support my family, whether I am working full-time or not, and I also want to work towards achieving the perfect balance between work and family. In regards to my professional life, I want to improve on some technical skills involved in my field, particularly automation. Beyond these points, I have things I want to tick off my bucket list, like sky diving for example!
Tell us about an adventure or trip you went on recently.
My two best friends and I booked a private jet and headed to Phuket for a week. It was a very spontaneous trip. We love this kind of stuff. We’ll end up going to dinners and discussing ideas, things to do, places to go, and then taking the plunge and just booking all of it last minute. I have no regrets though, we’ve had some amazing times so far.
If you could be insanely talented at one thing, what would it be and why?
I’d want to be able to pick up any language easily. The world is becoming increasingly smaller, so I think it’s an important skill to have if you want to connect with people. Another one is to better understand laws and taxation, I feel like that has a lot of advantages for business.
If you could swap places with someone for a day, who would it be and why?
I have to say Jeff Bezos because the man basically owns everything! Beyond that he’s a self-built billionaire, he opitimises his business processes well, so I’d be curious to see how he operates.

SUHEL MANCHANDA
An avid traveller, Suhel is a fiery Sagittarius seeking adventure, creative opportunities, and that special someone who appreciates both. Having visited over 30 countries in his 36 years, he’s been to almost every continent in the world, though he’d love to discover more of Africa and South America. Despite his wanderlust, he still enjoys exploring his own backyard, and spends his free time checking out museums, art galleries, theatres, and Thailand’s pristine beaches, and even activities like Paint Bar. You might also find him re-reading his all-time favourite book, The Silk Roads, watching documenteries, and waxing eloquent about his recent diving expedition in the South.
Having completed a BSc in Finance from MUIC, and more recently, a Master’s in Branding and Marketing Management from Chulalongkorn University, Suhel is putting his experience to great use with a mystery start-up that he’s keeping a surprise. More than just managing food and beverage projects, however, Suhel is just as comfortable inside the kitchen – if you get the chance, make sure to ask him to make his signature pad Thai.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
I’m very charming. [Laughs] I’m confident, hard-working, and I like to analyse things deeply; let’s call it critical thinking. I think those are enough good qualities to start off with – many more follow!
I do have a good sense of humour as well, which I think is the most important thing to break the ice. In my opinion, there’s no other way to start off a conversation! I’m also very family-oriented and very close to my sister Poonam, and a strong believer in family unity.
What are three non-negotiable qualities that you’re looking for in a significant other, and why?
Let’s call them the three Cs: compatibility; compassion, which is very important in today’s world; and someone who’s caring.
Let me elaborate – when I say compatibility, I don’t mean someone who agrees with you 100 percent. Having a difference of opinion can be good – it’s how you’ll teach each other, learn with each other, grow, and bring the best out of each other. Compatibility is when you find someone who understands you and vice versa; your values, goals, mission and vision align with each other; you care for and respect each other. And as for being caring and compassionate – you want someone who won’t criticise what you do or look down on you. I’ve also always believed in staying mentally and physically fit through a regular regimen of exercise, and self-respect is also really important to me, so I’d appreciate it if she valued both. Not giving up easily is my motto. I’m also looking for someone ambitious, crazy, and full of positive vibes.
If you could go back in time and do something differently, what would you change?
If I could find a way to make everyone equal, I’d like to go back in time and do that. I think it’s so important that everyone should be seen as equal – men, women, other genders, the LGBTQ+ community, different races.
As for going back in time in my own life, I would have been more daring (in a good way!), adventurous, and spontaneous in the past. It’s how I’m living now, but if I could, I’d travel back in time and tell my younger self not to say no to a lot of things – if you never try you’ll never know!
What is the worst piece of advice someone has given you, and conversely, what about the best piece of advice?
I’ve got to be blunt. The worst piece of advice someone ever told me was, “If you don’t get married right now, you’ll have all the leftovers – all the oldies, all the aunties, etc.” That was the worst piece of advice I’ve ever heard. But even beyond that, we still feel that pressure to get married as soon as possible, and honestly, what I’ve learned over the years is that everybody has a journey to follow of their own. Everyone has a life partner or destiny, and whoever is meant for you will come your way. Take your time, and whatever is good will happen.
The best piece of advice was, “be a good listener” and “take your time to make any decision in life,” and I’m trying to follow that now.
All electronic devices have stopped working for 24 hours, but you want to plan a date with your SO. What would you do, where would you take her, and why?
I’d show up to her place, knock on her door, and surprise her, and take her out on a date to somewhere she’d never been to before. Somewhere out of the ordinary rather than just the usual lunches, dinners, etc. I think I’d go for a drive and then have a picnic somewhere, maybe outside Bangkok if she’s open to adventure – and it’d be a great chance for her to try my cooking!

SUMEET GURBANI
Born in 1982, Sumeet is a Virgo with a keen mind, but also a passion for exploring life’s bigger questions – from spirituality, to food sustainability, and the ways we can give back to the community. A man who wears many hats, he’s an electronics exporter, F&B investor, vegetarian and vegan food supplier, and a jewellery designer and diamond merchant – so you know when he puts a ring on it, it’ll be a good one!
Having graduated with a BSc in International Business, Sumeet also has an artistic side and you can often find him behind the camera taking shots of whatever inspires him (perhaps that special someone). Here’s a hint – make sure to ask him about his interests in food, music, poetry and philanthropy if you want to get to know him better.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
My honesty, enthusiasm, and passion for great-tasting vegetarian food.
If you could solve one world issue, what would it be, and why?
I’d end world hunger – being in the food industry, and having insight into the wastages involved with food, I firmly believe that the world would be better off plant-based and properly fed. Zoonotic diseases would be something humans have less to worry about as well.
Where do you see yourself in five years, both professionally and personally?
Professionally, as a vegetarian and vegan food supplier, I’d like to be the go-to person for individuals, families and businesses. Personally, I’ll hopefully be bouncing around the country with a Mrs. and mini mes or shes! [Laughs]
A million dollars just landed on your lap, tax free. What would you do with it, and why?
Easy – I’d give 10 percent to charity, splurge some on myself and the family, and put the rest in investments.
If you had to plan the most creative date you could think of, what would it be?
In the past, I’d probably say cliché things like dinners on a boat or in a foreign country, but I’ve been there, done that. Today I’d start the date with brunch in bed, followed by a ride or hike into a farm, where we’d pick fruit and vegetables that I’d prep and cook for dinner, followed by a movie and cuddles. Candles are a must; shoes optional. Dating in the 2010s and beyond has only gotten more transactional over time, it’s so sad to see. I believe that if you don’t add value to another person’s life or vice versa, it’s better off you stay in your lane and work on yourself.
UDIT DHAWAN
A collector of travel-related experiences, well-grounded Virgo Udit has a BSc in Physiology from the University of Melbourne and an MBA from INSEAD, so it’ll come as no surprise that he’s both an entrepreneur and a sports and fitness aficionado. He’s recently completed a NASM-Certified personal trainer course, but that’s just the veganning of his passion for health and wellness – he’s also the founder of Pranaa Food For Life, a healthy, plant-based delivery service in Bangkok with meals that are 100 percent vegan and whole-food based, that is now coming up to its fifth year of business.
Not only is this eligible bachelor sure to do his best to make sure your relationship works out, but he’ll also make sure you work out, too – his passion is helping others reach their own personal fitness goals.
What are some qualities about yourself that you believe your future in-laws will appreciate?
To my future in-laws, I am 178cm tall which is basically six feet tall in Asia; I still have a full set of hair, slightly grey; and a large, pointed nose. I can pass on all of these hereditary features to your future grandchildren, along with my amazing sense of humour.
What is something unexpected about you that most people don’t know?
I have had a long-standing fear of rollercoasters since I was a child, they make me sick to my stomach. No bungee jumping or sky diving for me, I need both feet on the ground at all times, please!
What is your favourite memory with your loved ones, and why does it hold such a special place in your heart?
We have an annual family tradition of taking a trip together every year, usually during the summer holidays, and I have been fortunate enough to travel to most places around the world. Some of my favourites include: campervanning both islands of New Zealand, visiting the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, seeing snow in Japan, and, most recently, hot air ballooning in Turkey.
What are some of the places you have left on your travel bucketlist?
The pre-COVID plan was to do South America, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, all of which are still on my list. I have also never been to South Africa. I am not a fan of cold weather, but maybe Iceland just once to see the Northern Lights.
If you could only have one dish for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?
I don’t have a favourite dish, so if I could only eat only one thing for the rest of my life it would be potatoes. Because there are so many things you can do with them, and so many ways to cook them, it would be hard to get bored eating it every day!

ROHIT SACHDEV
Born on the 7th of September, 1973, Rohit captures the essence of a Virgo—dedicated, resourceful, and hardworking. After completing a B.S. in Management Information Systems and Finance at New York University he began building an impressive professional portfolio as the CEO of Soho Hospitality, a lifestyle restaurant group with a digital marketing, interior design, and food and beverage consulting arm that is behind some of Bangkok’s most popular venues such asHavana Social and Above Eleven. When he’s not elevating the calibre of Southeast Asia’s thriving F&B landscape, he enjoys an active lifestyle, often playing squash, football, and doing yoga. Rohit is also a fan of reading books, primarily centred on business; and public speaking.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be? Why?
Passionate—I’m a very passionate, energetic person, and I put my heart fully into everything I do! Ambitious—I’m on an entrepreneurial journey through my company Soho Hospitality and I’m excited to see where we are going with the global expansion of lifestyle restaurant brands. Finally, Honest. Honesty and integrity are very important to me both in and out of my workplace. It is a principle that guides me in everything that I do.
If you had to plan the perfect date or weekend away what would it look like?
My perfect weekend away would be with my friends to Railay Beach in Krabi, it is one of the most beautiful spots in Thailand with the magnificent limestone cliffs. We would stay at one of the houses at the Railei Beach Club, go island hopping, and enjoy the lovely sunsets.
What are some qualities about yourself that you are proud of, or that others value about you?
I am very loyal, I would cross oceans for those that I love if they needed me. I am not a quitter, I believe challenges are there to overcome and I never give up, no matter what!
Tell us about an adventure you went on recently, or something you hope to do in the near future.
Prior to Covid, I was in South Africa and I drove down the garden route from Cape Town to Franschhoek, Knysna, Plettenburg Bay, and Hermanus. It was an amazing holiday visiting the beautiful vineyards and vast shorelines of South Africa.
What qualities are you looking for in a partner?
I am looking for someone who is attractive, down to earth, independent, fun loving, social, and smart! She should be family oriented as well. I do not like people who are ill mannered, rude and negative. I appreciate a person who looks at the lighter and brighter side of life.
You have people coming over for dinner, in an ideal scenario what would you serve?
I would probably cook a Linguine Vongolé or Bolognese (which I slow cook for three hours over a low fire.) I’m really enjoying white wines lately and so I would probably start with a lovely Sancerre from France followed by a full bodied Amaroné!
What is a piece of advice that you live by?
I always use the phrase “The water under the bridge is always flowing.” I think we have a tendency to hold on to negative events or things that happen to us but we don’t realise the impact that it has on our mental health and wellbeing. It’s always better to let go and not hold on to any negative emotions!
