Taking full advantage of the unmatched opportunities given to them.
Silpakorn University International College (SUIC) has, for decades, aimed to foster in their students an appreciation for practical learning and applying the real- world skills they learnt to modern-day scenarios. Through their partnership with Vatel Thailand – Hotel & Tourism Business School, they’ve opened the doors to an array of golden opportunities in hospitality, both in Thailand and abroad. Three of their Indian students share with Masala the ways that they’ve grown, stepped out of their comfort zone, and had fun during their time at SUIC.

“For the first time in my life, I entered a kitchen, and all because of the curriculum here. I knew I wasn’t going to be a chef, but they made sure I knew all the operational aspects that are required to run a hotel: from housekeeping, to room service, the kitchen department, and sales and marketing.
“In my opinion, a leader should know everything about his business. That’s what SUIC and Vatel prepare you for. What really stood out for me was the opportunity to go to work in France. That test made me a much tougher person, and it was my turning point. This opportunity to travel, explore the world, and work elsewhere that’s not just Bangkok is not one that you get very often. I kid you not, I had an opportunity in my 3rd year to do management training with the Park Hyatt Paris-Vendôme!
“Vatel, which now has 50 schools across the world in 33 different countries, from Andora and Argentina, to Singapore and even the Congo, has networks literally across the world, and that’s what this generation needs. You’ll have the whole world on your phone, and all it takes is a single phone call to make things happen.”
KHWAN DUBEY
“If I hadn’t come to SUIC, it would have been far more difficult for me to go to a foreign country for an internship, an experience that many universities don’t provide. SUIC has what we call the Marco Polo Programme, an exchange programme which really helps with our learning.
“For my internship, I went to Nice in the South of France, where I interned in a five-star boutique hotel from the hotel chain Relais & Châteaux. I divided my time between service and the kitchen, and before I started, I was afraid of kitchen work. However, after I started, I became close to the chef, who was very kind and generous, and I learned a lot about kitchen work that way. These advantages have helped me learn about all the aspects of hospitality, from the bottom up.”
ANKITA SAIKIA
“The most important for me was learning to better my communication skills – even this interview is me getting out of my comfort zone! Even during my first year here, my communication skills have improved a lot, and I know that in the future, it’ll help me make the connections that I need.
“Here, there are many international teachers as well as Thai teachers, and that gives us good exposure because they teach us about their cultures, as well as Thai culture. We also have a lot of group projects so we can build our team work, and all the classes are designed in a way to make sure that everybody gets every opportunity to use all the many facilities. I’m not only learning things related to my studies, but I’m learning a lot about other people and I’ve made both Thai and international friends, which has helped me learn a lot about different cultures.”
